If the intestine get stuck in the hernia, the blood supply can be cut off. The intestines become ischemic and die. This is an emergency.

A hernia is a defect, or a hole, in the

muscles of the abdominal wall.

The hole in the muscle allows the intestines to “push” through.

Hernias can occur:

Around the belly button (ventral hernia/epigastric)

In the belly button (umbilical hernia)

In a previous scar (incisional hernia)

In the groin (inguinal hernia)

At the diaphragm (diaphragmatic hernia)
